About the event

Register for a transformative dialogue centered on the vital intersection of nutrition, pregnancy, and mental health, particularly within the framework of Black maternal health. Our program embarks on a comprehensive exploration of the crucial role food plays as medicine in addressing the pressing issue of maternal mortality and morbidity disproportionately affecting Black mothers and parenting people.

Throughout our discussion, we shine a spotlight on the concept of food sovereignty, empowering communities to reclaim control over their food systems and promote culturally relevant, nutritious diets. By examining how systemic inequalities, including limited access to fresh, affordable foods, contribute to adverse maternal health outcomes, we aim to foster awareness and advocate for tangible solutions that prioritize food justice and equity.

Moreover, our conversation delves into the complexities of postpartum mental health, acknowledging the unique challenges and barriers Black mothers face in accessing adequate support and resources. By amplifying the voices of experts and lived experiences, we seek to destigmatize discussions surrounding mental health and cultivate a more inclusive, compassionate approach to postpartum care.

As we navigate the multifaceted landscape of Black maternal health, we also underscore the significance of collective support and community-based care.

Recognizing the traditional wisdom embedded within ancestral practices and the value of intergenerational knowledge sharing, we explore the concept of the 'village' in nurturing the well-being of postpartum families. By fostering connections and solidarity among individuals, organizations, and grassroots movements, we endeavor to build resilient networks of support that uplift and empower Black mothers and their communities.

Through engaging discussions, insightful perspectives, and actionable insights, our program aims to:

  1. Heighten awareness of the systemic factors contributing to maternal mortality and morbidity among Black mothers, with a specific focus on the role of nutrition and access to healthy food.
  2. Explore the intersectionality of maternal health and mental well-being, shedding light on the importance of culturally competent care and holistic support systems.
  3. Advocate for policies and initiatives that promote food sovereignty, equitable access to nutritious foods, and culturally relevant healthcare services.
  4. Foster dialogue and collaboration among diverse stakeholders to strengthen community-based support networks and promote collective healing and resilience.
  5. Empower individuals to become agents of change in advancing maternal health equity and social justice within their communities.

Join us as we embark on a journey of discovery, solidarity, and empowerment, harnessing the power of conversation to drive meaningful change in the landscape of Black maternal health.
